From Urgency to Intention: A New Leadership Starting Point
From Function to Future: Why Leaders Must Make Space for Humanity
Leadership today isn’t just about managing the urgent—it’s about cultivating the intentional. When we pause the noise, we rediscover our purpose, our people, and the power of shared direction.
Last week over coffee, a longtime colleague and fellow leader looked exhausted. A solid strategist by every definition, she still felt guilty for stepping away from a mountain of requests, budget cuts, and looming staff reductions. “I shouldn’t even be here,” she muttered, half-joking. That sentiment stayed with me.
I asked her one simple question: Where do you want to be, professionally? Not what’s urgent, or what’s broken. Just: where are you heading?
It was a reset—one that we all benefited from during the pandemic pause. Back then, we tapped into something powerful: our human skills. Empathy. Generosity. Vulnerability. Compassion. Flexibility. Traits too often buried under performance reviews and quarterly goals.
We watched leaders breathe again, and more importantly, make space for others to do the same. That kind of leadership didn’t just calm the storm—it aligned teams with purpose.
Here’s how we can reconnect with that mindset today:
🧭 Reframe function as fuel for vision. Don’t ask “What are you doing?” Ask “Where are you going?” Help your teams zoom out from task lists to purpose-driven direction.
🪴 Create recovery space. Even a 30-minute breather with no agenda can spark insight. Normalize unplugging—even for leaders.
👥 Model emotional availability. Leaders who admit fatigue create conditions for trust and deeper connection.
🎯 Recommit to shared purpose. Host a team conversation that’s not about operations, but outcomes—why your work matters to those doing it.
I’m convinced that leadership in this moment isn’t about maximizing output. It’s about maximizing alignment—with people, priorities, and purpose. If we want teams who show up with energy, we have to show up with humanity.
As leaders, we're measured not just by what we produce but by what we nurture. If you're feeling the strain, you're not alone. But fatigue doesn’t mean failure—it’s often a sign that it's time to realign.
Let’s create space not just to breathe, but to build clarity, connection, and resilience for ourselves and each other. Let’s find time to talk on how to lead for the future success of you and your team.
